Ioan Baranga is a Romanian double bassist, acclaimed as a gifted virtuoso and versatile musician who has made a significant impact on both classical and jazz music. He is currently the principal double bassist of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in Belgium, a position he has held since a young age. Throughout his career, he has performed as a soloist and in leadership roles with prestigious orchestras across Europe, including the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, La Monnaie Opera House in Brussels, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jaap van Zweden, and Valery Gergiev.

In addition to his achievements in classical music, Baranga is highly esteemed in the jazz world. He has performed with legendary artists such as Toots Thielemans, John Hicks, Johnny Răducanu, Aura Urziceanu, Mircea Tiberian, Garbis Dedeian, and Anca Parghel. His unique playing style, marked by virtuosity and a strong sense of swing, has earned praise from iconic musicians, including Toots Thielemans.

Baranga is also a passionate researcher in the field of historical instruments and performance practices. He is currently pursuing a doctorate focused on studying the techniques and traditions of historical double basses and string instruments. His deep interest in the history of his instrument not only contributes to academic knowledge but also inspires his performances, where he masterfully blends tradition and innovation.

As a dedicated educator and mentor, Baranga has taught at leading institutions in Belgium, France, and Romania, and has given masterclasses in countries such as Belgium, France, Romania, China, and Colombia. His passion for education also extends to multidisciplinary projects, such as workshops on jazz improvisation and the integration of classical and contemporary techniques, organized in Belgium and Romania.
